Yale Station: Letters of Love

Good evening, my Darling. See the funny little girl staring at you from this picture? Her skin was bad and her hair straight. She was skinny and tremulous , full of plans and dreams. She was ______ if it was good to be alive. She was ______ what it meant to be alive. She loved but was not so much loved. She was moving slowly, day by day, towards you. She wrote verses, even then to you. Many or perhaps not so many people have made me ready for you. Somebody found my heart, hurt it a little and that gave it the knowledge of its full capacity for love. Some few delighted in my mind, fed it little bits of good, clear, thought. Polished it a little. A few knew the joy I'm capable of feeling and gave me bits of magic to delight in. I would love to see them all this night. See them and thank them. I would say, " Bless you and thank you for myself. All of you, who, day by day, have put the lights and shadows in my thinking. Who have given me a moment of laughter or even a tear. Who have forced me to see a truth, though a pain lay therein. And, oh!, you very few who followed me across and beyond the line of everyday thinking - who dared ask the forbidden question -who dared understand -. I would say too - " You did not know it was a task . That now it is a task well done! For he loves me - all of the corners, ,all of the finished and unfinished. He loves the hunger, and confusion and the fear. Not a thing any of you have done, any of you I have passed and left along the way, has been wasted. For, he loves me. I thank you. I wish it were possible for each of you to find your key to your own particular universe as I have." Do you know, it is a strange thought for me but I do not think I will be afraid of dying when it is time -. I love you so-. Your. Emily
